Foxconn-Manufactured Servers to be Utilized for Testing Apple’s AI Services: Report
Apple is said to be a bit behind its competitors when it comes to generative artificial intelligence, but now it seems that the iPhone maker is preparing to test its artificial intelligence services using Foxconn-made servers.
According to a report in Taiwan’s Economic Daily News’ South China Morning Post, Foxconn is supplying Apple with servers made in Vietnam to train and implement AI services. This is another step by Apple to diversify its production away from China.
For the uninitiated, Foxconn is Apple’s largest supplier of iPhones, and according to the report, it is also Apple’s largest supplier of servers used in its data centers.
In addition, Foxconn has supplied hardware to major tech organizations such as Amazon, OpenAI and Nvidia, so supplying them with servers is nothing new, according to the report.
“Apple GPT” is reported to be in development
In related news, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently said that Apple is actively developing its own system, called “Apple GPT.” But he believes Apple lacks a “clear strategy” and has yet to confirm its plans.
Another analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, also said that Apple may still be lagging behind its closest competitors in artificial intelligence. Kuo believes that Apple’s development in generative artificial intelligence is “significantly behind” its competitors.
It is also known that while Apple is working towards its AI goals, other companies are already making significant strides in the field of Large Language Models (LLM) for AI. In particular, Meta recently announced the Llama 2 LLM, which is distributed through Microsoft’s Azure ecosystem. Google has also recently introduced its own LLM called PaLM2, which powers its Google Bard chatbot.
